How to fill out a basketball score sheet

  1. Before tip-off, write both rosters with jersey numbers and mark the five starters.
  2. When a team scores, mark the new total in its running score column: one point up for a free throw, two for a field goal, three for a three-pointer. Use a slash for a free throw and a diagonal for a field goal, and circle the total for a three. Write the scorer's number next to it.
  3. Add each basket to the player's points boxes so the totals match the running score.
  4. Record personal fouls in the player's foul boxes (1 to 5) and in the team foul boxes for the half, so you know when the other team is in the bonus.
  5. Mark timeouts as they're called, and write the score at the end of each quarter.

Running score explained

The running score is the official record of every point. Each team has a column of numbers. When a team scores, you mark the new total and write the player's number beside it, so at any moment the last mark is the score and you can trace who scored every point.

Common marks: a single slash through the number for a free throw, a filled dot or diagonal for a two-point field goal, and a circle around the total for a three.

Fouls and the bonus

Each player has five foul boxes; in most high school and rec leagues the fifth foul means the player is out. Team fouls are tracked per half (or per quarter in some leagues), and once a team reaches the limit the other team shoots free throws on every foul. Check your league's rules for the exact numbers.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is this basketball score sheet free?

Yes. Print it or download the PDF. No account needed.

What paper size is it?

US Letter, portrait. Choose "Fit to page" to print it on A4.

How many players fit on the sheet?

Fifteen per team, which covers high school, AAU and rec league rosters.

Does it work for games with halves instead of quarters?

Yes. Use the first two period columns for halves and the overtime column if you need it. Team fouls are split by half.

Is there a digital version?

Yes. In BenchApp you can save the final score or keep score live from your phone with the Scorekeeper (PRO), and BenchApp builds the box score and season stats, so you're not copying the paper sheet into a spreadsheet afterwards.
