## How to keep score in baseball

- 1. Fill in the lineup: batting order, jersey number, name and position (1 pitcher, 2 catcher, 3 first base, 4 second, 5 third, 6 shortstop, 7 left, 8 center, 9 right).
- 2. For each plate appearance, use the box in that batter's row and the inning's column. Mark balls and strikes in the small boxes.
- 3. Trace the runner's path around the diamond as they advance, writing how they got there (1B, BB, E6, SB). Fill in the diamond when they score.
- 4. Record outs with the fielders involved: 6-3 is shortstop to first, F8 a fly out to center, K a strikeout. Number the outs 1, 2, 3 in the corner.
- 5. At the end of each inning, total runs, hits, errors and runners left on base at the bottom of the column.

## Common scorekeeping symbols

1B, 2B, 3B and HR are hits. BB is a walk, HBP hit by pitch, E an error (E5 is an error on the third baseman), FC a fielder's choice and SAC a sacrifice. K is a strikeout swinging and a backwards K is a strikeout looking.

Outs use fielders' position numbers: 4-3 is a ground ball to second thrown to first, L7 a line drive caught in left, and 6-4-3 a double play from short to second to first.
